Fish Out of Water

December 5 – December 18, 2019

Reception: Thursday, December 5, 3:00 – 5:30 pm

Baldwin Students Take Over Chandler Gallery In School-Wide Show

As a tribute to its diversity and unity, students of the Maria L. Baldwin School have worked together to create “School,” an aptly named art show to reflect both where the creations come from and their theme: fish.

Students from all grades, JK through 5th, each made a fish to contribute, bringing the total number of work to 337 small, mixed media collages. The theme and content of the show, which goes on display December 3rd, were conceived by art teacher Lilli Martinez.

“I thought the motif would give the kids an opportunity to work on a similar theme while working as individuals and adding their own special details and personality to their work,” she said.

She said that it’s a unique and cherished experience for students across the school’s seven grade levels to build a thematic show together. Not only is it an opportunity to see their own work on display but an opportunity to admire their peers’ work as well.

“Seeing it all together enables them to visually experience the fact that we’re all together in this school and that, in a way, we are all working together, whether we’re thinking about it or not,” Ms. Martinez said.

“School” is on display at the Chandler Gallery from December 5 – December 18, 2019. The opening for the show will be on Thursday, December 5, 3:00 – 5:30 pm.
