Expanding Abstraction: New England Women Painters, 1950 to Now

April 7 – September 17, 2017

This exhibition examines the rich and diverse history of painting in New England by showcasing the work of regionally based women abstract painters who have made significant contributions to the field. Spanning from the 1950s to the present day, the works on view expand traditions of abstract painting and are a testament to the artists’ unflagging productivity and unprecedented creative innovation.

Drawn primarily from deCordova’s permanent collection, the show features works by Natalie Alper, Kristin Baker, Sharon Friedman, Maud Morgan, Ann Pibal, Jo Sandman, Sandi Slone, Barbara Takenaga, and Maxine Yalovitz-Blankenship, among numerous other modern and contemporary artists. The exhibition reveals the complexities of painting in New England and lays the foundation for a more inclusive understanding of the development of abstraction through the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
