AROMATIC ART

“When people look at encaustic work, they can’t help but touch it,” says Lola Baltzell, president of MassWax, the local chapter of International Encaustic Artists. Baltzell is curating an exhibition of encaustic prints by MassWax members, juried by Betty Bothereau, owner of L’Attitude Gallery.

Baltzell describes encaustics as receptive to a wide array of mixed media approaches with “endless opportunity to explore and play and create different textures.” The sculptural quality of beeswax adds flair to the printmaking process, and the resulting monotypes can resemble impasto paintings. Baltzell adds that encaustics are a joy to work with because the melted beeswax “smells good.”

According to the MassWax website, working with encaustic is “addictive.” Since 2010, this organization has served as a resource for support and education for encaustic artists throughout New England. Its 31 members may work in a variety of mediums, incorporating encaustic as one element in their work. Meetings often encompass demonstrations and workshops as well as peer critiques and the exchange of ideas.

“WAX and PAPER: Encaustic Printmaking” is on display at the Chandler Gallery from June 29- July 31. The opening reception will be held on July 9 from 6:00-8:00 pm.
