Thoughtful projects in a supportive context

At the heart of our teaching philosophy is a non-judgemental approach to art. The projects are developmentally age appropriate and designed to awaken each child’s creativity.

Programs

Snack ‘n Track

Instructor: Ian Prishwalko

Monday – Friday, 2 – 3:30 pm
Grades K – 5

If your child is unsupervised between arrival of the buses and the beginning of classes, you must sign up your child for Snack ‘n Track.

What is Snack ‘n Track?

A program offered to ensure the safe arrival and supervision of students whose parents and guardians are unable to bring them to their art class. Students registered for S’nT either attend the Baldwin School or arrive at the Baldwin School stop via Cambridge Public School bus.

Where does Snack ‘n Track take place? 

In the Agassiz Baldwin Afterschool program space, at the Baldwin School located at 28 Sacramento Street, until students walk to Maud Morgan Arts with a staff member.

Benefits of being a part of Snack ‘n Track?

-Parents/Guardians are contacted if students do not arrive at the Baldwin School as planned
-Supervision at the Baldwin School prior to class and while walking to Maud Morgan Arts
-A nutritious snack
-An opportunity to work on homework or art projects prior to class

Collaborative Mural Making

Make your mark! Students will work together to plan, design and paint three murals in the MMA side yard!

Woodworking Projects

Use a drill, a saw, and a hammer!

Students will learn techniques for using hand tools as they make projects of their own design. This class is designed for new and returning students. 

Projects will be based on prompts; for example, how to use a drill followed by discussing something one might build with wheels or a lesson looking at a variety of wooden shapes and a thinking about how they could be used to make a wooden animal.

Spin & Build

Instructor: Tiffany Playford

Grades 3 – 5

Clay goes through different stages to become an ice cream bowl or a cool sculpture for your room. Learn to build abstract sculptures in clay, or center on the wheel to make useful pots. We will talk about form, function and aesthetics to make your visions come to life. You will glaze your work in beautiful colors to be fired in the kiln before you take it home.

Kinga’s Kindergarten Circus

Build a class circus train with animals and performers through 2D and 3D projects in a variety of mixed media. Storybooks and students ideas will inspire imaginative making and a circus that is real and imagined.

Pottery Prints

Instructor: Tiffany Playford

Grades 6 – 8
10 Tuesdays, 3:30 – 5:30 pm

Create functional or sculptural pieces with unique patterns and designs using linocut to add imagery and texture. Hand-glaze your work and experience the surprises when the kiln is unloaded.

 

 

 


Paint & Print

Instructor: Jenn Wood

Grade 3-5

This class will mix traditional painting and printmaking practices enabling students to create their own mixed media pieces. Students will practice color theory, creating print editions and more!

Building Blocks of Woodshop

Exploring Painting & Sculpture

Mixing colors and materials in this program students will learn the foundation of 2d painting as well as 3d sculptures!

Faux Animal Sculptures

Let your imagination run wild to create whimiscal animals in this fiber arts based class. Artists will design a 3-D wall hanging piece.

Life Size Building

How big can you build?

This program is supported by the Boston Society of Architects. Students will use mixed media materials; using paper mache, recycled materials and more to build their own sculptural objects with a focus on skyscrapers, dream homes and urban landscape. The class will be challenged to create in new ways while working independently and cooperatively.

Little Fingers Shaping Clay

How many shapes can you make?

The sensory pleasure of clay is unsurpassed, particularly for little fingers just starting to explore the world.

Because clay can be shaped into anything, it simultaneously stimulates the imagination, and builds fine motor coordination.

Color Intensive: Draw/Paint

Expressive imagination and close observation come into play through exploring a wide variety of media in works on paper. People, animals, and objects in nature, dreams, fantasies and abstract lines and forms will be suggested as stimulating and challenging subjects.

Fashion Design: Illustration, Textiles & More!

Become a Fashion Designer!

Enter the world of Fashion by creating and illustrating your own designs. Discover various techniques of illustrating your fashions using pencils, markers, and collage; design your own fabric patterns, shoes, accessories and create fun environments for your models. Students will also learn the basics of hand sewing.

The Natural World

Draw, print, sculpt, paint, and build the natural world around us! Students will take a closer look at our local Massachusetts landscape by creating 3D/2D pieces of art.

Exploring Impressionism

Instructor: Kinga Borondy

Grades 1 – 2
10 Thursdays, 3:30 – 5:30 pm
September 19 – November 21, 2019

Explore the play of light and movement through the life and works of 19th Century artists: Monet, Manet, Degas and Cezanne. Students will use Claude Monet’s light brush-strokes, create their own dot landscapes like Georges Serault and make cubist self-portraits like Pablo Picasso. We will make Monet-style giant cut-outs and hang them in the studio.

BIG Press & Print Projects

Students will experiment with LARGE scale printmaking. From simple stamping techniques to more complex multi-step processes, students will find what it means to create with light, transferring and reproducible art work.

Environmental Painting

Instructor: Matt Hufford

Grade 5-8

Students will create paintings inspired by the environment and ecosystems that surround them everyday. In this course, artists will create still life paintings, plein air paintings [paintings made outside] of the nature and incorporate natural materials.

Woodshop

Instructor: Eugene Zeleny

Grades 3 – 5

Instructor Eugene has designed a workflow where students will have a variety of woodworking projects. Such as musical instruments, coat hangers, rubber band cards and more! Class is designed for new and returning students.

Clay Critters

Instructor: Kinga Borondy

Grades 1 – 2

Use clay to mold, shape and create! This class will hone in on fine motor skills to sculpt animals and creatures! Decorate your work with marks and patterns, then glaze your pieces to make then bright and colorful!

Printmaking with Chris

MMA is excited to offer an introduction to printmaking with one of MMA’s established adult instructors, Chris Wallace. Chris will design the class to open the world of printmaking and all its possibilities to our middle school artists. More details to follow soon!

Spin & Build

Boston POPs!

In this class we will explore images from some of Boston’s most iconic public art installations; from Edwin Austin Abbey and John Singer Sergeant murals at the Boston Public Library (Central Branch in Copely Square) to the monument to Hungarian Freedom Fighters by Gyuri Hollosy in Liberty Square. We will learn about these artists’ lives, study their imagery and make art in their various styles and mediums. This class will combine literature and imagery.

Ready, Set, Draw + Build!

Students will draw imaginary objects, animals, plants, machines, games, robots, or other ideas. Students will practice different drawing techniques and styles, and build small models of some the objects they draw. At the end of the session students will form team collaborations to build final project[s].

Masterpieces

Fairytale Fridays

Stop Animation: In partnership with Media Arts Studio

This program is in partnership with the Cambridge Media Arts Studio with guest instructor Joshua Arévalo. Students will create stop motion scenery and film in the MMA 2D studio.
