Maud Morgan Arts afterschool is split into two cohorts based on grade: one group for 1st-2nd and the other for 3rd-5th. Please enroll your child in the afterschool group that includes their grade for Fall 2024. These groups will be split further into smaller classrooms that will rotate through different teachers and art curriculum throughout the school year. We offer afterschool programming for middle school students (6th-8th grade) on Mondays and Wednesdays. Throughout the school year, students will work with our instructors in mixed media printmaking/painting as well as hand-building and wheel throwing in our ceramics studio.

Mondays, 1/6 – 3/17 (no class 1/20) 6:30-9:30 PM This introductory level course is designed for students new to ceramics or for students looking for a refresher on basic skills. Students will imagine, draft, and execute various forms of their choice. This will be a fun, creative, and experimental space to explore handbuilding according to students’ interests. Basic skills covered include wedging clay, construction techniques, surface decoration techniques, and more. Students must be 18 or older to participate.

Tuesdays, 1/7 – 3/25 (no class 1/28 and 2/18) 6:30-9:30 PM This introductory level course is designed for students new to ceramics or for students looking for a refresher on basic skills. Students will imagine, draft, and execute various forms of their choice. This will be a fun, creative, and experimental space to explore wheel throwing and some handbuilding according to students’ interests. Basic skills covered include wedging clay, wheel throwing, how to attach a handle, and more.

Wednesdays, 1/8 – 3/19 (no class 2/19) 6:30-9:30 PM This class is for intermediate and advanced potters who are comfortable with throwing and handbuilding and are looking to greatly expand their skills and knowledge. Students will be introduced to advanced handbuilding and throwing techniques, the basics of glaze chemistry, additives to clay, basic plaster mold making and slip casting, and mixed-media ceramics. Students will come up with their own projects with support from their instructor along the way.

Tuesdays, 1/7 – 3/11 6:30-9:30 PM This course covers linoleum relief printing techniques using oil-based, water-soluble inks primarily on paper and fabric. There will be an emphasis on non-toxic methods and materials. Techniques covered will include: reductive relief, multiblock registration, jigsaw relief, hand cut stencils, fabric printing, hand printing, and printing with a press. For introductory and experienced print levels alike.

Thursdays, 1/9 – 3/13 6:30-9:30 PM This class is for students who have already taken a few classes, and are looking to continue building on their ceramics knowledge. Students will imagine, draft, and execute various forms of their choice. This will be a fun, creative, and experimental space to explore wheel throwing and some handbuilding according to students’ interests. Additional skills include throwing more complicated forms, surface decoration techniques, and more.

Sunday, March 16, 2025 - 10 am - 1 pm Create a linoleum block print with your own unique design in this three hour workshop. Learn how to carve a linoleum block, mix ink, and print with a printing press and by hand. Leave with a set of handmade printed cards and your linoleum block carved with your design. All materials are provided. Students must be 18 or older to participate.
