See How Loss Feels
Grief may be a universal human emotion, but the expression of
grief is highly individual, as evidenced by “Images of Grief and Healing” at the Chandler Gallery.

From the Studios: Student Work

June 02, 2015

Reception: June 4, 5:30 – 6:30 pm

For anyone who is despondent over the state of today’s youth “From the Studios: Artwork by ABC and MMA Students” at the Chandler Gallery provides a hopeful perspective on the next generation. The outpouring of youthful creativity from students enrolled in Maud Morgan Arts classes and the Agassiz Baldwin Afterschool program is charming: when given the opportunity to make animal benches, students in 2nd-5th grade sawed, hammered and painted a llama, a platypus, a unicorn, and Dr. Seuss’s Yertle the Turtle.

Small Works Salon 2015 at the Chandler Gallery Celebrates Text in Art

This exhibit includes a little light reading. The pieces in “Small Works Salon 2015: Word + Image” at the Chandler Gallery incorporate signs, poems, memos, receipts, and sometimes whole pages of text into 2D and 3D works. Juried by Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, a distinguished artist and professor at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, this salon blurs the boundaries between writing and visual art.

Upon Closer Inspection

March 02, 2015

Reception: March 5, 2015, 6:00 – 8:00 pm

Peter Scott “makes a positive habit of avoiding the picturesque” says Roger Kizik, Scott’s co-exhibitor in the Chandler Gallery’s upcoming show, “Upon Closer Inspection.” The same could be said of Kizik’s art. Kizik’s works on paper depicting perfume bottles, underwear and museum statues make a dynamic counterpoint to Scott’s brooding urban landscapes and mythic Italian countrysides. Adds Scott, “I think both Roger and I value the role of humor and wit in our work. And we both draw squiggly.”

Intimate Still Life Paintings by Amy Clarkson

Intimate Still Life Paintings by Amy Clarkson

January 19, 2015

Reception: January 29, 2015, 6 – 8 pm

“I love that it is never easy to paint the next painting,” says Amy Schuyler Clarkson, whose quietly radiant watercolors and oils betray neither hesitation nor struggle. The luscious colors in Clarkson’s still lifes at the Chandler Gallery entice us to contemplate plantains, hydrangeas, jam-thumbprint cookies and stacks of cupcake liners. “I have always been attracted to small works of art,” says Clarkson, who cites ancient Mughal watercolors and Japanese woodblocks as inspiration. “They draw a viewer in and invite accessibility that larger works do not.”
